Questlove pens article on hip-hop's effect on black culture

Listen to The Roots on iHeartRadio

The Roots drummer Questlove is detailing hip-hop's effect on African-American culture.

In an essay titled "When the People Cheer: How Hip Hop Failed Black America" published on Vulture.com, Quest explains that hip-hop has "taken over black music" as well as black culture.

Because hip-hop culture has become so widespread, he says it has also become "invisible."  The culture's pervasiveness has allowed "anything fashioned or put forth by black people" to take on the word "hip-hop."

Quest points out that this type of labeling doesn't happen with other genres.  And while it could be a sign of hip-hop's success, it's also a warning that the genre is in danger of drifting "into oblivion."
